Investigation of the Global Spatio-Temporal Characteristics of Astronomical Seeing

Astronomical seeing is important for monitoring the atmospheric environment, observation scheduling and management, selecting astronomical sites. This study first attempts to establish a near-global map by employing fifth European Centre Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis (ERA5) data combined with estimated model. Then, some example sites’ results from ERA5 were compared against balloon-borne microthermal measurements differential image motion monitor (DIMM) instrument. The global variations exhibit large spatial dependence. best areas are generally discerned over mid-latitude regions, consistent regions of Southern Observatory Tibetan Plateau. In addition, values Plateau in spring better than other seasons. site show that sites measurements. Overall, presented this can provide reference basis further understand astronomy selection optoelectronics equipment path selection.
